Best Time to Visit Uttarakhand
Best Time to Visit Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand has two clear seasons worth planning around. April to June is when the Char Dham temples open, the meadows turn green and the high passes clear. December to March is when the snow comes and the winter treks begin. The months in between are either monsoon, when landslides close roads, or the short golden window of October and November when the air is at its clearest.
Which one is right depends entirely on what you came for.
Uttarakhand season by season
Summer, April to June
The busiest stretch of the year and the reason is simple: the Char Dham temples open in late April or early May and stay open until the temperatures drop. Roads to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri are clear. Daytime in the hills sits comfortably in the twenties.
Summer treks come into their own here too. Valley of Flowers is not yet in bloom but the higher meadows are green, and treks like Ali Bedni Bugyal and Har Ki Dun are at their most pleasant.
Book early. May and June fill months in advance.
Monsoon, July to September
The hardest months to travel in Uttarakhand, and the ones most worth understanding before you plan. Landslides close roads with no warning. Yatra routes get suspended. Visibility drops to nothing for days.
There is one exception, and it is a big one. Valley of Flowers only blooms during monsoon. Late July through August is the single window when that valley looks the way the photographs show it, and it is worth the weather to see.
Everything else, wait.
Autumn, October to November
The most underrated window in the year. The monsoon has cleared, the dust has been washed out of the air, and the mountain views are the sharpest they get. Temperatures are cool but not yet cold. Trails are dry.
Roopkund, Kuari Pass and Har Ki Dun are all excellent now. The Char Dham temples close for winter in late October or early November, so this is also the last chance for the yatra.
Winter, December to March
Snow season. The high yatra routes shut but the winter treks open, and this is when Uttarakhand is at its quietest and most striking.
Kedarkantha, Brahmatal, Kuari Pass and Chandrashila all run through these months. January brings the deepest snow. March starts the thaw.
Best time for trekking in Uttarakhand
It depends what you want underfoot.
For snow: December to March. Kedarkantha and Brahmatal are the reliable choices. For meadows and flowers: May, June and, for the Valley of Flowers specifically, late July to August. For the clearest mountain views: October and November, no contest. For long high-altitude routes: May to June, then September to October, when the passes are open and the weather is settled.
Best time for Char Dham and yatras
The Char Dham temples open around Akshaya Tritiya, which falls in late April or early May, and close around Diwali in late October or early November. Exact dates are announced each year by the temple committees.
Peak demand is May, June and September. July and August are technically open but monsoon disruption is common, and many pilgrims avoid them.
Kailash Mansarovar sits on a different calendar entirely. That yatra runs May to October, and it is not in Uttarakhand at all, it goes through Nepal into Tibet.

When not to go
If your trip is fixed and cannot move, avoid mid-July to early September unless the Valley of Flowers is specifically the reason you are coming. Road closures during monsoon are not rare events, they are the normal condition of those months, and a two-day landslide can end a seven-day itinerary.
The other one to watch is late April and early May around the temple opening. The roads to Kedarnath and Badrinath are at their most congested in the first two weeks, and what should be a six-hour drive can take twelve.
